The Sacred Hands Path at The Living Library
At The Living Library, every act of care is sacred. Whether it’s washing dishes, chopping wood, or tending the garden, your hands become part of something greater, a living ecosystem of service, spirit, and learning. “Sacred Hands” is more than just a volunteer role, it’s a path. You begin with the basics, and slowly, as you root into the rhythm of this land, you start weaving your own thread into the tapestry of the sanctuary.
It starts with simple service
Your first days may be humble, yet essential. You’ll help with:
These are the foundational actions of any sacred space, anchoring you in presence, humility, and care.
- Cooking simple, nourishing meals
- Cleaning and keeping shared spaces beautiful
- Weeding, carrying, organizing, and assisting with daily chores
- Supporting the basic flow that keeps the Living Library thriving
These are the foundational actions of any sacred space, anchoring you in presence, humility, and care.
Then, day by day, a chord is added
As you settle in and become attuned to the space, your role begins to expand. With time and attention, you’ll begin to notice what’s needed before being told, step into greater autonomy, responding to the rhythm of the land and people, take initiative in ongoing projects, plant preservation, ceremonial preparation, sanctuary improvement, offer your unique gifts, skills, and vision to help shape this evolving dream. Like learning a song, you begin with one note. Then, one by one, new chords are added, until your hands know the melody of this place by heart. In Sacred Hands, every contribution is meaningful. But over time, something more begins to awaken, a deeper connection to the Earth and her medicines, a sense of purpose in the unseen harmony of collective life, the trust to carry projects, and maybe even create your own within this living dream, the inner fire of service, fueled not by duty, but by devotion.
Who is this for?
You don’t need experience in ethnobotany, plants, or permaculture. All you need is:
Whether you stay two weeks or many moons, Sacred Hands is here to welcome those who walk with intention and heart.
Before you apply, here’s something important to know:
The conditions we share with volunteers are the result of nearly a decade of learning, refining, and walking this path with hundreds of souls from around the world and working with different plateforme like Workaway. You’ll notice we ask for a contribution that covers food, Wi-Fi, electricity, and basic commodities, something that may seem unusual compared to typical WWOOFing or volunteer exchanges elsewhere. But Costa Rica is the most expensive country in Central and South America, and running a sanctuary here requires balance.
In the past, we asked for nothing and served rice and beans at every meal. It worked, for a while. But we came to understand that great work deserves great nourishment. If we are to offer our best energy to the land, our bodies must be cared for, too. While we are moving toward food sovereignty, growing our own abundance takes time.
We’ve also seen that short-term stays require a lot of energy, orienting, training, and integrating each new arrival into the flow. That’s why we value long-term commitment: those who stay longer begin to give back more than they receive. They become truly attuned to the rhythm of this place. And as such, the financial contribution to the sanctuary decreases the longer you choose to stay and serve.
Please remember: we are a non-profit organization. Everything we do is powered by donations and the humble income from workshops and Temazcal ceremonies. Your support, whether through presence, work, or contribution, keeps this dream alive.
- A willingness to show up fully
- A grounded, humble attitude
- The openness to learn, unlearn, and co-create
- The strength to serve and the softness to listen
- Being a self-starter
- Unafraid to work under Costa Rican sun and in the jungle
